Franklin College Welcomes Darryl Jones for Guest Artist Exhibit
Franklin College will showcase the works of artist Darryl Jones from Monday, Sept. 23 to Friday, Oct. 18 during the opening guest artist exhibit of the 2024-25 academic year. The exhibit, “Darryl Jones Photographic Retrospective and Augmented Imagination: A Mystical Journey,” will commence with an opening artist talk on Monday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. in the Henderson Conference Room, located on the second floor of the Johnson Center for Fine Arts. A reception will immediately follow in the Elba L. & Gene Porrteus Branigin Atrium, located on the first floor.
Jones, an Indiana native, grew up in Fort Wayne. Following high school, he traveled to Europe, spending a year photographing people in their natural environment. After returning to the United States, he attended Indiana University, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and studying comparative religions and near Eastern languages.
Since 1975, Jones has been concentrating on photography professionally on a free-lance basis. He has had exhibitions in Indiana, as well as Chicago, Cleveland, New York and Boston. His first book, titled “Indianapolis,” was released in 1981 and was a collaboration with the Indiana Historical Society. The book documented the city as it was at that time, and his photographs were contrasted with the city of the past.
Most of Jones’ books have concentrated on the beauty of Indiana. During an interview, Jones shared, “In a sense, what I’ve been trying to do is convey to Hoosiers, and then to other people who are coming to the state, is why I think Indiana is a beautiful state and what it has to offer. I think there’s an inherent beauty in the landscape.”
