Meet Your Ambassador: John Ross

By Aspire Economic Development + Chamber Alliance | | 3.14.25

  1. When did you become an Ambassador?

Although I don’t remember exactly, I’m guessing I became an Ambassador in ‘18. I know I was active before the merger in 2020.

  2. How has being an Ambassador been beneficial to you and/or your company?

There is great symmetry between what we do at SCORE and what is done at Aspire. The ability to connect with and assist Aspire members is on point with the mentoring SCORE provides new and growing businesses.

  3. Why did you want to become an Ambassador?

To facilitate relationships with businesses in Johnson County. I also have an interest in the advocacy role that Aspire provides.

  4. Do you have a favorite memory as an Ambassador? Please share.

Memories from events are too long to list. But I was very proud of the move that Aspire made to the new location. Although the Main St location was adequate, the new location provides more space and a greater level of professionalism for Aspire and its members

  5. What advice do you have for professionals trying to connect with other professionals. What is your favorite networking tip?

I think the most important tip in networking is to ask questions. Folks love to talk about themselves, their business and the strengths and challenges they experience. It easily leads to more in-depth discussions and enhanced relationships.

  6. What was your first job?

Besides the usual lawn mowing and summer jobs my first “real” job was working for the IU School of Medicine doing research for one of the first Family Nurse Practitioner Programs. The interviewing experience I got opened the door to being hired at St. Francis Hospital (now Franciscan Health) in Human Resources. I stayed there from ‘74 until my (finally!?!?) retirement in ‘24.

  7. What is something you like to do outside of the business setting? Do you have any hobbies?

With 2 kids and 6 grandkids, all close, my wife of 51 years and I spend a lot of time attending sporting events, school activities, etc. I’m a huge IU fan and really enjoy having dinner with friends and settling in on “boys vs girls” euchre!!!!

  8. What is your favorite vacation and why?

To celebrate our 50th anniversary my wife and I went to the Galápagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador. It is a huge wildlife refuge and we cruised the islands for a week. The giant tortoises were phenomenal.

  9. What makes you a raving fan of Aspire?

First, the extraordinary staff that work for Aspire. They are extremely devoted and committed. Second, the ability to interact with folks who are the lifeblood of the economy, being primarily small business owners
