A recent Harris Poll, commissioned by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE), highlights the critical role chambers of commerce play in driving economic prosperity and addressing community challenges across the United States.

Nearly half report that their business has been a chamber member, with 31% currently active and 41% of non-members considering joining. Top key motivators for membership include business growth (51%), networking (40%), and customer attraction (40%). Also mentioned were developing workforce (24%), accessing training and professional development opportunities (23%), and influencing laws and policies (19%).

“Business owners are recognizing that chambers of commerce are not just about networking and economic growth. They’re becoming essential partners in workforce development and advocacy,” said Angela Vandersteen, Vice President of Investor Development + Relations at Aspire.

“By joining Aspire, businesses can access vital training opportunities, collaborate on workforce solutions, and amplify their voices on critical issues,” said Vandersteen. “This shift in how the business communities view our work and value highlights the growing role chambers play in building stronger, more competitive communities.”

“The poll’s findings assert the crucial role chambers of commerce play for businesses, economies and communities,” said Sheree Anne Kelly, ACCE president & CEO. “Chambers are trusted and innovative organizations. As a result, we are seeing tremendous momentum to bring even more bold leadership and lasting impact on the communities we serve.”

Key data points from the ACCE report include: 81% of respondents consider their local chamber a reliable resource for businesses, while 88% believe chambers address key community challenges effectively.

64% of adults familiar with chambers are more likely to patronize businesses that are chamber members, and 63% are more inclined to recommend those businesses. 76% agree that chambers are stewards of strong local economies, and 74% credit them for job creation and community development.

Additionally, 70% of adults expressed interest in learning more about their local chamber’s contributions, particularly its impact on the community, general operations, and member businesses.

The poll also revealed that nearly half of U.S. adults feel familiar with their local chamber, and 86% of those aware are satisfied with its work. However, misconceptions persist, with 63% either unsure or mistakenly believing chambers are government entities, highlighting an opportunity for education and outreach.

Though often working closely with state and local government leaders on community initiatives, chambers of commerce like Aspire Johnson County are non-governmental organizations. Aspire in particular is unique for serving as both the chamber of commerce and the state recognized local economic development organization for Johnson County and southern Indianapolis.
